NEW MEMBERS OF THE COURT OF JUSTICE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES AND OF THE COURT OF FIRST INSTANCE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES

Formal Sitting on 6 October 2003 at 5 pm in the Court of Justice


The terms of office of a number of Members of the Court of Justice of the European Communities will expire on 5 October 2003.

By decision of 23 July 2003, the Representatives of the Governments of the Member States renewed certain terms of office and appointed new Members for the period
7 October 2003 to 6 October 2009.


The Court of Justice

Judges

Renewal of mandates of:

Mr Claus Christian Gulmann (Denmark)
Mrs Fidelma Macken (Ireland)
Mr Allan Rosas (Finland)
Mr Romain Schintgen (Luxembourg)
Mr Vassilios Skouris (Greece)

Appointment as Judges at the Court of Justice:

Ms Rosario Silva de Lapuerta (Spain)
Mr Koen Lenaerts (Belgium)

The President of the Court of Justice, Mr Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias (Spain), and
Mr Melchior Wathelet (Belgium) will be leaving their posts.


Advocates General

Renewal of mandates of:

Mr Francis Jacobs (United Kingdom)
Mr Dámaso Ruiz-Jarabo Colomer (Spain)

Appointment as Advocates General at the Court of Justice:

Ms Juliane Kokott (Germany)
Mr Luis Miguel Poiares Pessoa Maduro (Portugal)

Advocates General Mr Siegbert Alber (Germany) and Mr Jean Mischo (Luxembourg) will be leaving their posts.

The Court of First Instance

By decision of 24 September 2003, the Representatives of the Governments of the Member States appointed Mr Franklin Dehousse as a Judge of the Court of First Instance of the European Communities for the period 7 October 2003 to 31 August 2004 to replace
Mr Koen Lenaerts, who has been appointed a Judge of the Court of Justice.

Formal sitting

A formal sitting marking the end of the term of office and departure of certain Members and the swearing-in and entry into office of their successors will take place on Monday 6 October 2003 at 5 pm in the main courtroom (Boulevard Konrad Adenauer entrance, opposite the European Investment Bank).

Accreditation may be obtained from the Court of Justice Press and Information Division by returning the attached form by no later than 12 noon on Thursday 2 October 2003.

The European Commission television unit "Europe by Satellite" will be filming the formal sitting.

President of the Court

On 7 October 2003 the Judges of the Court of Justice will elect a new President of the Court of Justice of the European Communities.
