NEW JUDGES AT THE COURT OF JUSTICE AND THE COURT OF FIRST INSTANCE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES

Formal sittings of 11 and 12 May 2004




In accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Nice (signed on 26 February 2001 and entered into force on 1 February 2003) and the Act concerning the conditions of accession of the new Member States, the Representatives of the Governments of the Member States will adopt two decisions on 1 May 2004 appointing ten new judges to the Court of Justice and ten new judges to the Court of First Instance.

The new judges will enter into office upon taking the oath.

The formal sittings

The formal sittings at which the new Members will enter into office will be held:

-     for the new Members of the Court of Justice, on Tuesday 11 May 2004 at
4.30 p.m.

-     for the new Members of the Court of First Instance, on Wednesday 12 May 2004 at 4.30 p.m.

They will take place in the Grande Salle d’Audience (Main Court Room) of the Court of Justice (entrance on Boulevard Konrad Adenauer, opposite the European Investment Bank).

Accreditation may be obtained from the Press and Information Division of the Court of Justice by returning the accompanying form no later than 12.00 noon on Friday, 7 May 2004.

EBS 'Europe by Satellite' will film the formal sittings.

A PRESS ROOM WITH OFFICE EQUIPMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE


Please note the following:


–    the press are asked to use the Thomas More entrance, Boulevard Konrad Adenauer.

–    the public is requested to remain quiet and seated throughout the hearing;

–    the use of mobile phones or other loud electronic devices is not permitted during the hearing;

–    photography and filming are authorised only at the very beginning of the hearing (seating of the President and parties only);

–    the use of flashes or other supplementary lighting systems is not permitted;

–    photographers and cameramen may not move around the hearing room in order to take photographs or to film;

–    if numerous photographers and cameramen are interested, a "pool" may be arranged by the Press and Information Division;

Article 221 of the Treaty of Nice provides that “The Court of Justice shall consist of one judge per Member State”, while Article 224 states that “The Court of First Instance shall comprise at least one judge per Member State”.
